Poster Sessions: Why State of Charge Fails, and What Battery Operators Need Instead
As battery storage portfolios scale, operators rely on State of Charge (SoC) values from their Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA, and OEM tools to inform dispatch and trading. But SoC answers the wrong question. It tells you how full the battery is, not how much energy you can actually charge or deliver. The gap is real and measurable. In Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) systems and aging assets, cell imbalances, BMS estimation errors, and offline racks quietly reduce usable energy. The flat LFP voltage curve makes this worse: small SoC errors translate into large energy errors. The result is “ghost” MWh that exist on the dashboard but not in the battery.
